WASTE - to - ENERGY plant :) !!!

CHURNING WEALTH OUT OF WASTE !!! That is what this is all about . 

A Typical WtE plant

The average person generates about 2 kg of waste per day . Thats a hell lot !!! But the good news is that we can re-use this waste into clean ,renewable , money-saving energy !!!
The waste-to-energy plant normally generates energy , most commonly electricity , by the incineration of wastes.
It is a form of energy recovery.
The first WtE plant was first established way back in 1975 at Massachusetts . 


The working of the WtE plant can be categorized into six categories . Rhetorically : 

I ) INSPECTION and TRANSPORTATION : In this , the refuse is weighed and inspected . Only the required municipal waste is accepted carefully.                                                                         

II)  COMBUSTION : Hydraulic ramps feed the refuse into integrated furnaces where it burns .

III)  ELECTRICITY GENERATION : High pressure steam is driven into a turbine generator to produce electricity .

IV)  PURIFICATION OF FLUE GAS : Here , harmful green-house gases and oxides of nitrogen are removed to prevent pollution.

V)  EXTRACTION OF FERROUS METALS : Iron and Steel are seperated from the ash by magnetic-ore seperation technique.

VI) RECOVERY OF ASH : The final product is then collected and carefully land-filled .

This method of incinerating the waste is a relatively old method of waste-to-energy conversion. Nowadays new technologies such as GASIFICATION , PLASMA ARC GASIFICATION , PYROLYSIS and THERMAL DE-POLYMERIZATION are being more effectively used . 

Now the big question is WHY THIS WHEN WE CAN LANDFILL easily ???

Well , the answer is that this process is more feasible and more environmental friendly . 

WtE plants produce less POLYCHLORINATED DI-BENZODIOXINS than conventional homes !!! Now ...thats something !!!

Morever , 

1 Metric tonne of MSW ---> produces ---> 1 Metric tonne of CO2 , because MSW has the same mass fraction as CO2 itself , .....................................................BUT , on land-filling , 

1 Metric tonne of MSW ---> produces ---> 62 Cubic Metres of CH4 , which has twice the green-house capability than CO2 !!!! .... 

HMMMMM....THINKING MATTER ...ISN'T IT ???

Arthur Dehon Little !!!!

He was an american chemist who we can say revolutionized the term " Chemical Engineering " , cause he was the person to introduce the term " UNIT OPERATIONS " and categorize it into a seperate field under Chemical Engineering !!! This in turn promoted the industrial sense of research in this field . 

From the prestigious Massachusetts Institute Of Technology , at which he studied chemistry from 1881 to 1884 , he gave back his alma matter a sense of rejoice as he was the instrumental person in the development of the branch of Chemical Engineering at MIT . 


He was the co-founder and head of a student magazine called " THE TECH " . 


His notable achievement being the discovery of ACETATE . Also he obtained a patent for his devised , more effective paper processing technology plant technology .


He founded the ARTHUR.D.LITTLE ( ADL ) , an international management consulting firm , which is now a multi-national organisation which plays key roles in the development of unit operations research . 


In chemical engineering , the Unit Operation is the basic step for starting any process , thus , Arthur D Little has simply laid an effective and basic foundation for the development of this very field !!!

Dalton's labour !!!

JOHN DALTON !!! The pioneer who first published the table of relative atomic weights , which is the key for the growth of the field of chemical engineering !! He laid the stepping stone in proposing the first atomic model in the history of science !!! 


Although two centuries old, Dalton's atomic theory remains valid in modern chemical thought . 


Dalton was the one who started using symbols to represent the atoms of different elements ( see above picture ) .
In his 1805 work,  "A New System of Chemical Philosophy," Dalton propounded the following postulates for his atomic theory :

1. The chemical elements are made of atoms.
2. The atoms of an element are identical in mass.
3. Atoms of different elements have different masses.
4. Atoms combine only in small, whole-number ratios like 1:1, 1:2, 2:3, etc.
5. Atoms can not be created or destroyed.                                                                                                                                                         

The last postulate may seem simple , but the whole basic draft of chemical engineering calculations such as mass transfer and material balances depends on that lucid line put up so lucratively !!!

Not a person to be kept in one single field , Dalton achieved ground-breaking success in his research of       " Colour Blindness  " , which is now referred to as " DALTONISM " in his humble honour !!!

In honour of Dalton's work, many chemists and biochemists use the (as yet unofficial) unit DALTON (abbreviated Da)  to denote one atomic mass unit, or 1/12 the weight of a neutral atom of carbon-12 .

A lunar crater has been named after Dalton !!!

Antoine-Laurent de Lavoisier !!! THE FATHER OF MODERN CHEMISTRY !! The reason why we are actually studying chemical engineering in the first place !!! His achievements cannot be sidelined forever !! THE LAW OF CONSERVATION OF MASS , one of the most basic law in the working of the universe was postulated my this great man right in the 18th century !!! He helped reform the method of nomenclature of chemicals , recognized and named oxygen and hydrogen  and what not !! MAY HIS LEGACY CONTINUE !!!
